Everyone says that our time at college will fly by. This adage still could never prepare us for how quickly a single year can come and go, from the arrival of bright-eyed first-years during NSOP to the final goodbyes of graduating seniors during commencement. Nothing could make this fast-paced, ever-changing nature of Columbia more clear than the task of looking back throughout the year in an attempt to recall the events that have come and gone in nine short months.
Every moment since August has been characterized by individuals raising their voices and refusing to be silenced, from the viral spread of the #MeToo movement and student demonstrations against white nationalist speakers in October to the ongoing graduate student worker strikes.
Our work on the opinion pages of Spectator has been an attempt to do these voices justice—to adequately and accurately represent what students are saying on campus, and to find the voices on campus that have yet to be heard.
These voices are more than just the storytellers of 2017—they have been the authors. And there are still stories left to be told in the next eight months of 2018; just remember to keep your eyes open for them.
All the best,
