While most students spend their summers working, studying, or resting, Jacqueline Dubrovich, CC ’16, will spend hers in Paris fencing in the Olympics.
After a strong team performance at the NCAA regional tournament, 11 Lion fencers went to the NCAA Championships this year. Nine of the 11 fencers made the All-American roster and helped Columbia to a third place finish. Sophomore Tierna Oxenreider finished in second place in women’s épée, and senior Vera Kong and first-year Sam Kumbla each tied for third in women’s sabre and men’s foil, respectively.
When sophomore foil fencer Alanna Xue arrived in Rio De Janeiro to fence at the Pan American Championships last month, she knew this moment was particularly special because it was her last opportunity to compete in a junior women’s foil event.

Columbia fencing had a successful weekend, with the No. 2 ranked men’s team beating No. 1 University of Notre Dame twice and the No. 1 ranked women’s team beating No. 2 Notre Dame once.
The men’s and women’s fencing teams dominated in their first competition of the year this past Saturday. The Light Blue combined for a 9-1 victory at the Penn State Invitational. The women’s team swept the competition for a 5-0 record, while the men went 4-1.
