Track and Field wins three titles and sets shot put record

Columbia won three events over the weekend at the Armory.

Columbia’s track and field team excelled at the Dr. Sanders Columbia Challenge this past weekend on its home turf at the Armory, seizing first place in three events and breaking a school record.

Of the 15 women’s teams competing, the Lions tied for fourth with Cornell, earning a total of 34.5 points but missing the podium to UConn with 76.5 points. Similarly, the Light Blue performed well in a pool of 17 men’s teams, coming in fifth with 53.5 points behind Cornell’s 80 points. Brown, the third Ivy team competing, finished seventh in women’s and eighth in men’s.

In field events, sophomore Patrick Passalacqua made program history in men’s shot put, going 17.23 meters and finishing third. On the women’s side, senior and reigning Ivy League high jump champion Anna Jordahl-Henry finished second in her signature event with a height of 1.75 meters.

The Columbia men amassed a significant chunk of their points in the distance medley relay, finishing first with a time of 10:02.04. The quartet was led by first-year Matt Gatune, followed by fellow first-years Austin Rios-Colon and Jacob Van Orden, and anchored by sophomore Ryan Borden.The Lions’ side was further supported by first-year Matthew Mazero, who took first place in the men’s 60 meter dash with a time of 6.97 seconds.

Coming in at 2:09.95, first-year Lucy Henkel came in fourth place in women’s 800 meter. Fellow first-year Elia Ton-That collected first place in the women’s 3000 meter with a time of 9:27.10.

The Lions will travel to Staten Island to compete at the Mets Indoor Championships on Friday, Feb. 3 at 11 a.m.
