When friends and family talk about Michael Berkeley, Business
'87, a picture of something beyond happiness emerges.
Berkeley's 38 years were "upbeat" and "giddy." Married to Lourdes
Perez-Berkeley, a former Miss Puerto Rico and a successful
portfolio manager, Berkeley was part of a marriage which a cousin
described as one in which the two "never lost sight of themselves."
Berkeley recently opened his own brokerage firm, The Berkeley
Group, in the north tower of the World Trade Center.
Born in New Rochelle on Sept. 11, 1963, Berkeley attended Iona
Prep high school, where he played basketball and football,
starring as quarterback of the freshman team. After getting his
bachelor's degree from Providence College in 1985, Berkeley
came to Columbia's school of Business, graduating in 1987. After
graduating, he was offered a position in Merrill Lynch's sales and
trading department. It was on a business trip that he met Perez.
In addition to his wife, Berkeley is survived by his two sons, Eric
and Jason.
