Two Rowing Coaches Hired

September 21, 2007, 2:38am

Columbia continued its recent string of hirings for the third week in a row, as Jonathan Douglas and Edward Golding were named assistants to the men’s rowing team.

Douglas joins the Lions’ staff as the assistant and freshman coach for the heavyweight squad after three seasons as the freshman heavyweight coach at Rutgers. This past offseason, however, the Scarlet Knights dropped their rowing program from the varsity level, and Douglas became available for hire. In addition to his time at Rutgers, Douglas brings Ivy League experience to Columbia, having coached and competed for the Big Red. In his one season as a coach in Ithaca, he led the Big Red’s varsity four with coxswain to a second-place Eastern Athletic Rowing Conference finish as well as a 10th-place finish at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association meet.

Golding becomes the third rowing coach added from Princeton this season and will assume the position of assistant and freshman coach for the men’s lightweight team. This past season, Golding was an intern coach for the Tigers, working with both the heavyweight and lightweight squads. Before working at Princeton, Golding held the title of assistant varsity coach at his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin, leading the third varsity eights to a third-place finish at the Eastern Sprints in 2006.
