The end of the soccer season is upon us, as Columbia hosts Brown on Saturday in the regular season finale for both teams. The match represents the Lions’ final chance of the year to notch an Ivy victory.
Two teams of diametrically opposed fortunes will take to the pitch on Saturday. While the home team has struggled to an 0-6-0 league record, the Bears have yet to lose, besting all opponents on the way to a 6-0-0 conference standing. Brown’s win over second-place Dartmouth last week clinched the team’s 19th Ivy title.
Brown’s attack is led by junior Dylan Sheehan and senior Kevin Davies, who have scored 10 goals each this season to pace the Bears’ offense. Sheehan is coming off an Ivy League Player of the Week performance against Dartmouth, after scoring the game- and conference-winning goal. Midfielder Darren Howerton provides the creativity in the center third of the pitch, recording eight assists in 16 matches. The Brown goal is guarded by freshman keeper Paul Grandstrand and junior Jarrett Leech, both of whom have let in less than a goal per game thus far this season.
The Columbia effort is led by midfielders Tom Heinbockel and Steven Keker. Heinbockel leads the team with a total of nine points on the season, while Keker provided both scores against Cornell last week. In the absence of freshmen Hayden Johns and Bayo Adafin, senior striker Tom Davison will have to be the target in the Brown third of the pitch. Senior goalkeeper Michael Testa continues to provide a solid effort in goal, despite playing behind a defense that hasn’t been in sync all Ivy season.
Action begins at 7 p.m. at Columbia Soccer Stadium.
