A few words on the power of words

Last week I saw a video about a boy who was put down, endlessly taunted, but made it. Through amazing drawings and words, he tells his story, thoughts, insecurities and of the negativity he urges us all to rise above.

After watching it, I sat back and thought about the hurtful words I’ve heard here at Columbia.

There are guys who are called players and girls who are accused of being sluts. There are racist jokes and hateful slurs directed at people who do not deserve it.

I know a girl who came into college excited beyond words, but after being harassed and talked about by a nasty girl to whom she had never even spoken, retreated into her shell of insecurities and took a long time to re-emerge.

I know a boy who was forced to become accustomed to random instances of intolerance against his religious beliefs, and now peacefully accepts this prejudice as a fact of life.
