As an unemployed senior, I'm starting to care more and more about money.
There, I just dropped the bomb. Money. Income inequality. Ugh.
Why my disgust? I grew up in a family where money was simply not talked about publicly. To publicly declare any financial information was was inappropriate and out-of-line---it was all about giving the impression to outsiders that money wasn't a big concern.
For that reason, my parents were too proud to even talk about college costs beyond the family. By the time we were bargaining for more financial aid at Columbia, I had finally learned to not talk about money. I had a full ride at Ohio State and that money factor almost made me a Buckeye instead of a Lion---so what? Nobody had to know.
At this moment, I’m reminded of a former Opinion blogger’s venture into talking about the “Big Ass Green Whale”---or, in his words, the idea that:
Many more people here than will admit (to various degrees) struggle financially.
Nobody's picked up on the topic since, unfortunately, which is why I'm doing it now.
