There weren't too many surprises in Day 3 of Room Selection---mixed-point groups took the remainder of EC exclusion suites, junior pairs picked into Watt studio doubles and Woodbridge medium and low-demand lines, and many Ruggles 6 and 8-person suites were taken. The losers of the day were 20-point 6-person groups hoping for Ruggles, as well as pairs with a good lottery number hoping for better rooms in Woodbridge and Watt than what was left.
Today's selections have some interesting repercussions going forward. First, Symposium doubles, which we originally predicted to go during Senior Regroup or the 25-point groups, are set to last until at least 20/1216. This was likely due to floor plans now accurately showing much smaller rooms than before. In addition, some pairs opted for Watt studio doubles over the Woodbridge one-bedrooms because of the wind tunnel. With only 44 Watt studio doubles, a Symposium double, a Woodbridge low-demand, and two Ruggles RA suites, and 53 2-person groups left to pick, the amount of desirable housing for pairs is dwindling.
Some have wondered what the number of Watt studio doubles making it to Regroup will be. The verdict is still out on that, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it in the single digits. This continues the trend this year of fewer students dropping to General, which is sure to have interesting consequences for rising juniors and sophomores, especially those on the waitlist (me!).
One surprise was the cutoff for the last Claremont 3-person suite at 20/342, which managed to pass by both Senior Regroupers and the two 26.67-point groups. This is a big dip from the situation last year where the suite didn't make it past the seniors.
