During midterms week, a group of SIPA students huddled in the basement of Lehman Library, fixated on their laptop screens. They were not churning out papers—midterms were happening, but so was the aftermath of the Chilean earthquake. Using a newly developed open-source program, Ushahidi, they were scouring the internet for reports of crises and mapping the locations of these crises onto an online map, all to gather data for NGOs in Chile to utilize.
