How do I put this? In street terms, I am a “Twinkie” (think colors), though I prefer “banana,” or rather, one who checks the box for “Asian-American,” occasionally scribbling in “Korean” if the option for specificity is available. That being said, I hardly consider myself “Asian-American.” To be clear, I am in no way embarrassed or dismissive of my Korean background. Like many Asian-Americans of our generation, I was raised outside my motherland and therefore lost touch with much of my parents’ heritage while adopting that of America’s.
