Claude Steele came to Columbia a year ago under very unique circumstances: Since John Mitchell Mason, Columbia's first provost in 1811, effectively every person who has occupied this position has come from our faculty body. As an "outsider," Mr. Steele had his work cut out for him, and with that challenge in mind, his first year here was a success—more or less.
