Yesterday the University Senate managed to pass, with little trouble, a ban on smoking within 20 feet of any building on campus. I wrote a post a couple weeks ago on "why this smoking ban business is a bad idea," and now that it's in effect I can only hope that it won't be enforced. But far more troubling than the 20-ft resolution is the fact that the Senate seemed to heavily favor a ban that would prohibit smoking anywhere on Campus (one senator, who confusingly called his own proposal "draconian," suggested that the prohibition extend to the relevant parts of Amsterdam and Broadway).
