About the bust...

This week we are featuring a series of student opinions on last week's drug bust. To read yesterday's voice, click here.

There are lots of crimes that people forget are crimes: jaywalking, popping an Adderall or two at exam time, consensual incest (apparently), and, without doubt, smoking weed. People in the real world are arrested and go to jail for these forgettable crimes, and we say all the time that we live in the real world, so by syllogistic reasoning, we shouldn’t all be shocked when five (alleged) drug dealers are sent to jail. But I think the drug bust last week terrified us because, though the five students’ illegal activity seems to be on a far grander scale than your typical Ivy Leaguer, it could’ve been anyone—it could’ve been you. That, I think, touches the very definition of empathy.
