For many American students, study abroad is a luxury and a dream, often unrealized. But for students with the opportunity to take hold of this great privilege, study abroad is imperative. Period. It is lamentable then that at our resource-rich, elite institution, study abroad is seen as something decorative, an embellishment to the undergraduate experience and not instead as a core requirement. Indeed, the University seems to make it difficult to study abroad, suggesting summer study or even shorter week-long studies (read: vacations) as alternatives.
