REVIEW: Frites 'N' Meats gives Mel's some (un)healthy competition

Watch out Mel's Burger Bar, there's a new burger in town. The Frites 'N' Meats truck, which parks on 116th Street and Amsterdam Avenue on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., serves up gourmet-style burgers for less than $10.

The burger's core---the meat, bun, and cheese---do not fail to deliver, with meat from DeBragga & Silver, bread from the fancy Balthazar Bakery, and cheese from Murray's. But the premium toppings are what truly makes this grass-fed angus burger something special. The basic toppings are free: raw onion, tomato, mesclun greens, ketchup, mayo, and mustard, but for 75 cents extra, you can get fancy add-ons like oven-roasted tomato and applewood-smoked bacon. Don't skimp on the deluxe toppings, the extra 75 cents are worth it.
