REVIEW: Music Unites shakes up Mel's Burger Bar

According to a certain viral video, Friday is the day to look forward to---but not necessarily here at Columbia. Last night at Mel's Burger Bar---home of the new Thursday night party---Columbia's branch of Music Unites, an organization built to support inner-city school art programs, recruited a full house. The group hosted its first live event featuring three student bands ranging genres from afro-punk to dance-beat rock, filling the venue pretty close to maximum capacity.

Blaxel, a rock-focused band, kicked off the show at 12 a.m., performing several of its original songs with lead singer, Meghna Prasad, CC '10, at the forefront. Prasad commanded the stage and enthralled the crowd with her soulful mezzo-soprano. Complemented by the extensive riffs of the guitar and punctuating beats of the drum, Blaxel set the bar high and filled the burger joint with a sound reminiscent of Santana and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
