A quick look around the world of Columbia and Ivy League sports to see who’s hot and who’s not.
Three Up:
1. Adam Powell—Powell placed 16th in the NCAA Championships in the 50 free event late last week, and is aiming to take his skills to London next summer as a member of the 2012 Olympic swimming squad for the United States. Powell swam a career and Columbia record in the prelims of the 50 free, finishing in 19.55 seconds. That, to me, is a winner.
2. Men's golf—Golf, much like swimming and diving, really only matters during the Ivy Championships for one weekend a year. Still, it's hard not to notice the success that this team has had (three-time Ivy champs) and has continued to have this spring. Senior Clark Granum finished No. 12 in a field of 91, and fresh faces make this team one to watch at Ivies.
3. Fencing—While it may not have had the national champions and All-Americans that it has in years past, the fencing team finished No. 7 in the nation at the NCAA Championships. Any team that finishes seventh is on the rise, and one with only three seniors, is red-hot.
