HOUSING RECAP: Day One is OVER

For those who missed out on the excitement of Suite Selection Day 1, here’s a quick rundown on what you missed.

The most dramatic change actually had nothing to do with suites or cutoffs, but rather with a totally new layout in John Jay lounge. The cage is still there, but it’s no longer where the actual selection is done—it’s now done in a room right off to the side. The changes seem to have made quite a difference, as things were generally calmer than it’s been in the past.

Beyond that, nothing too far out of the ordinary. Watt two-bedrooms were gone first, the last one being taken an hour before the midday break. In addition, Hogan fours and fives, Ruggles fours, EC two-person flats, the all-single five-person suites, and the four-person townhouses were all taken by the end of the day. The high-demand Woodbridge lines were nearly decimated and several Watt one-bedrooms were taken as well. This was one of the biggest departures from last year: After Day 1 last year, there were still 11 high-demand suites left in Woodbridge and we were actually much further along in terms of lottery numbers (groups with numbers above 2100 had already picked). This shift was likely the result of the dramatic increase in two-person, 30-point groups and was something we could have seen coming. The other big news was the increased availability of the six-person suites. Last year, the six-person suites in the highrise were long gone at this point and the townhouse cutoffs are also sure to be surpassed.
