If you've been following the news recently, you have probably read about the Title IX complaint filed against Yale. This complaint (which alleges the university did not do enough to foster a safe campus environment) shouldn't come as too much of a shock to anyone (sexual violence happens at Yale, at Columbia, at every college), but it's Yale, so it's been in the Times a bunch.
I'm not an expert on the issue of sexual violence, and I don't know how much I have to add to the discussion. But what I do have to say is that I am consistently shocked at the extent to which nominally educated people are willfully indifferent—or hostile—to women or men who speak out against date rape or other sexual violence on campus. Yesterday, a friend and WashU alumnus sent me an article from WashU's student newspaper that profiles a victim of sexual assault. The article is worth a read—pay particular attention to the comments (full disclosure: My friend is Dylan Suher, one of the commenters).
