This week's As I See It was submitted by Embry Owen, a former Spec photo editor who is studying abroad in Buenos Aires. To submit your photography, send 5-7 photos and a brief statement explaining the significance of these images to you and your life at Columbia (opinion@columbiaspectator.com).
Colonia del Sacramento, settled by the Portuguese in 1680, lies across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires and is a popular vacation spot with Argentines. Visitors trade the chaos of the city for Colonia's well-preserved architecture and quiet cobblestone streets. The town measures just a few blocks wide, and its historical district is a World Heritage site. Dusty dirt roads connect farms to tucked-away beaches, where locals gather to fish and swim.
Though colorful, Colonia demands to be shot in black and white. To me, Colonia was textures—of buildings, streets, and the sea. Black and white captures the time-lapsed beauty of the town (and the dust around the edges).
