Free Metrocards aren't so free

Those of you who follow New York state politics closely (all five of you) may already be aware that the state Legislature is considering a bill to provide free or discounted rides to select New Yorkers. Under the proposed law, the MTA would be required to give free metro cards to public school kids, senior citizens, retired police officers, off-duty police officers, and off-duty fire marshals. More relevant to Columbia students, however, is the fact that the bill would also require that the MTA give college kids metro card for 25 percent off.
