A quick look around the world of Columbia and Ivy League sports to see who’s hot and who’s not. Check out why men's tennis and softball are middling, while women's tennis is on the down-slide for the second straight week.
Three up:
1. Women's Lacrosse---Yes, it was against Yale, 2-9 and 0-4 in the Ivy League coming into the contest, but the first home Ivy win in program history is a big (if not slightly belated) deal. Having goalkeeper Karlee Blank named Ivy League defensive player of the week cements this weekend as a step in the right direction.
2. Baseball---While I'm sure the team is disappointed not to sweep a 5-25 Cornell squad, as head coach Brett Boretti said anytime you can win three out of four in Ivy play is a good weekend. The team's season will come down to the wire against Penn and Princeton in the coming weekends to see who wins the Gehrig Division.
3. Track and Field---Sprinting star Sharay Hale led the Lions again this weekend, placing first overall in the 200m dash and winning by a wide margin, while sophomore Uju Ofoche posted 6.16m in the long jump which was good enough for first place as well as a new school record. Overall, I counted 10 first place finishes by the squad this weekend. That's a ton.
