On leaving New York, part one

I told a friend recently that I'm applying to grad school anywhere but New York and she yelled at me. I can't remember everything she said, but the words that stuck were, "Neil, I come from not-New-York-City. Don't go there."

I have to admit, she scared me a little bit. I mean, I lived away from the New York area from ages 2-10, but there's not much for ten year-olds in the City anyway (except for those rocks in Central Park—those are awesome).
