Just in time for the fall semester, Max SoHa and Panino Sportivo---Columbia favorites north of campus---welcomed a new neighbor: Nikko Hibachi, a Japanese restaurant on 123rd and Amsterdam.
Hibachi, for those who don’t know, is a term referring to the flat steel griddles used in Japanese restaurants by Teppanyaki chefs to prepare food while diners watch on the sidelines. The technique is meant to bridge the gap between chef and diner, allowing food to be served, literally, fresh off the stove.
