Occupy Wall Street, a leaderless community of protestors, has been camping out in the Wall Street area for the past week as they protest financial inequalities across the country. Today, events turned hostile as New York police officers began to violently confront demonstrators. Some protestors are students from various universities, including Columbia and Wesleyan.
We've been watching the live stream and several accounts from protestors include the phrase: "Mass arrests by police of peaceful protestors." Members of the group claim that they are protesting "peacefully, to preserve their constitutional rights. Even though things are chaotic and a bit disorganized, people are finding strength in numbers, in unity, and in one another." Check out the live stream from the protests here, but be aware, the content may include offensive language. Occupy Wall Street also has a Twitter.
We'll post updates as they come. Please send any tips to spectrum@columbiaspectator.com. Updates after the jump.
