The numbers of Nancy Upton: Age? 24. Size? 12. Total comments, likes, and tweets about her in the last month? Thousands. Upton found Internet fame this September when she won American Apparel’s plus-sized model search campaign, only to have her title revoked.
The issue? Upton entered the contest as an ironic joke. Offended at the company’s general treatment of beauty as well as their phrasing (“Think you are the Next BIG Thing?” and “junk to back it up” were included in the guidelines), she submitted photos of herself eating in various states of undress. American Apparel, upon the revocation of her title, stated that Upton was deriding the “positive intentions of the campaign.”
