Throughout my secondary school education (and I guess my time here at Columbia), I dreaded Sundays. Consumed with long neglected projects and essays, the final day of the weekend rarely left any room for leisure and enjoyment. But, there was a five minute glimmer of hope when 60 Minutes came to a close: Andy Rooney. Moody as I was, I serendipitously reveled in those three minute rants.
If something bothered him, confused him, or even made him laugh (which was very rare), Rooney would have something to say about it, and he let the country know every week. One may wonder, why would viewers subject themselves to watching a wrinkly old man with gargantuan eyebrows? Its because he spoke what we all feel; he confronted those little issues that pissed us off.
The king of kvetching retired just three short weeks ago at the ripe old age of 92 and, frankly, my Sundays just haven’t been the same since. In tribute, here are some Rooney-gems that have really stuck with me, and his fans, over the years.
