Johnny Depp speaks at panel on Hunter S. Thompson in Miller Theatre

Last night in Miller Theatre, the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, in partnership with FilmDistrict, sponsored a panel on "The Life and Legacy of Hunter S. Thompson," with Johnny Depp, director Bruce Robinson, Alex Gibney, Douglas Brinkley, and Porter Bibbs. The event drew lines from many students who arrived early in hopes of catching a glimpse of Jack Sparrow himself.

When Johnny Depp walked on stage sporting a cowboy hat, a brown leather vest, a small handkerchief attached to his waist, and an irresistible smile and a wave, the audience must have expected something like The Johnny Depp Show. Instead, they got a panel of five, who sentimentally reminisced about the memory of Hunter S. Thompson, creator of Gonzo journalism and writer of the novel "The Rum Diary."  Following the panel, the film adaptation of the novel was screened.
