This week in live music, we caught up with Ishmael Osekre, GS ’09, lead vocals and guitar of the (mostly) Columbia band Osekre and The Lucky Bastards, right before his new weekly gig at Shrine in Harlem (2271 Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard at 134th Street) on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. This Afro-indie jam band can't be pinned to any one genre but instead transcends all, with lyrical and reflective beats. The band "turns local sounds global and brings global sounds local” with its clear African influence, but its sound goes beyond this, creating a universal funk that anyone would want to jam to. Make sure to check out Osekre tonight at Shrine, and at its many upcoming performances at CU-sponsored events.
