Questionable future for Columbia faculty

Deputy News Editor Sammy Roth’s article this week on faculty salaries explained how Columbia professors in nine major departments receive less money than their peers at other Ivies, raising concerns about the overall quality of life of faculty members. Taken into consideration with recent disputes over faculty benefits, these findings call to question Columbia’s ability to recruit and retain the best and brightest faculty members, especially compared to other Ivy competitors. “All of these issues come together to create perhaps an unparalleled deterioration in the quality of faculty life,” Italian professor and Policy and Planning Committee member Teodolinda Barolini said.
