“You think I give a shit if people think I’m queer? It’s what I love to do, so I don’t care,” says Alphonse Poulina, 63-year-old knitter and longtime facilitator of Wednesday’s “men’s night” at Knitty City knitting shop off Broadway on W. 79th Street. Poulin teaches ballet at Julliard, speaks four languages, and has been knitting since he was eight years old. He knits birthday gifts, baby gifts, divorce gifts, dresses, skirts, sweaters, shawls, and wedding veils, one of which took him eight months.
