Birth of a baby, and an art career?

A recent issue of The Eye featured an interview with the artist known as Bob and Roberta Smith. The “duo” is just one person, who focuses on art world and real world politics in his work, all with a good amount of humor. Reading it got me thinking about the kookiness of art these days–like a performance artist who gave birth to her first child in a Brooklyn gallery this past October.

Nope, not kidding. Live birth, as art. Marni Kotak, the performance artist who, for nine months, developed this artistic display, has taken what is usually a very private event and made it into a show that viewers could attend, a spectacle as accessible and public as going to the movies on a Friday night.
