Quick takes for the break: Sherlock Holmes

Maybe for the first time all year, you’ve got enough free time to get out and see a movie. Over the break, we’ll provide occasional “quick takes” on movies we’ve seen, briefly covering what we liked, what we didn’t like, and whether it’s worth your time and money. Today: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

It’s been a while since I last read a Sherlock Holmes story, but I loved them. After seeing the first Guy Ritchie film, I was impressed with the acting and the special effects, but I did cry a little inside because of how different Robert Downey Jr. was from the Conan Doyle Holmes. It was slightly disconcerting that Downey Jr. was a little more Ironman than detective— you see this with the internal monologue (1:40) of Holmes’ thoughts before he would beat up his enemies. This cheapened his intellectual capacity and is an entirely Hollywood fabrication.

Still, I enjoyed the first film—maybe because I watched it in London. The trailer to A Game of Shadows looked fairly alright and if anything, I knew I was going to get a whole lot of action regardless of the plot.
