Starting this week, the Athena Center for Leadership Studies at Barnard is offering a selection of workshops that are designed to equip you with leadership skills applicable both now and after college.
Students can take classes under the categories of "Communications," "Risk-Taking and Resilience," "Financial Fluency," "Management," "Entrepreneurship," "Technology," or "Negotiation," and the subject matter ranges from the basics of investing to running successful meetings.
I did a little research to see if these classes—free to Barnard students—are worth your time, and while this review is by no means exhaustive, pretty much everyone said these courses were in some way useful. The courses are all taught by professionals in their fields. Note that these classes are a bit pricey for current Columbia students. $299 to be exact Columbia students, staff, and alumni receive a 15 percent discount on the courses, which start at $199 per two-hour session.
Some of the most popular courses, such as the entrepreneurial skills course and the finance course on "Preparing for Life After Graduation" are full, but there are still many with spots open.
