The term “girl band” comes with very specific associations: challenges to the patriarchy, heavy black eyeliner, Bikini Kill. But while some of today’s exclusively female and female-fronted bands retain those rebellious characteristics associated with movements past, there’s been a shift in the way some more recent acts present themselves, musically and otherwise.
