These days, the ability to interpret the images and shapes around us is arguably just as important as verbal competency. At least that’s the philosophy behind the term “visual literacy,” a concept that was first formalized in 1969 by John Debes and is influencing a growing range of learning programs across the country. However, with the growing abundance of images in today’s web-based society, are we becoming so reliant on purely visual modes of communication that it impedes our verbal development?
