When industrial engineering and operations research professor Donald Goldfarb arrived at Columbia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science nearly 30 years ago, the school was an entirely different place.
In 1978, the Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics was founded as the Department of Applied Physics and Nuclear Engineering had only nine faculty members. Neither the computer science department nor the biomedical engineering department existed.
