In a column published on Friday, Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Carlos Alonso argued, "Through the creation of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in 1991, Columbia attempted precisely to close the chasm between its two fundamental enterprises of teaching and research."
