Hinkson talks safe spaces and conspiracies at SGA

The message of last night's Barnard Student Government Association meeting? Be careful with your words. Read on to see what Barnard dean Avis Hinkson thinks students should stop saying, and what the Muslim Students Association is doing to protect the rights of Muslim students at Columbia. Emma Goss reports with highlights from the meeting:

  • Say what?: Hinkson, the administrative guest of the night, said that she is “questioning and possibly challenging our use of language around two words in particular—transparency and safe spaces.” Hinkson said that she wants the entire campus to be a safe space, and that students should reconsider requesting designated safe spaces. “As an education institution, we value conversation and debate and disagreement," Hinkson said. "In a safe space being our entire campus, it should be comfortable for you to say, ‘I disagree.’ It’s really important to me that we think about the use of that word."
