Unless you live under a rock—or in Harmony Hall—you probably know that President Obama is going to be speaking at Barnard’s commencement this year.
Yes, it was supposed to be Jill Abramson, but the White House had other plans. Barnard students are over the moon, as they should be.
Those on this side of the street have been a complicated combination of jealous, aghast, shell-shocked, devastated, and outraged. Several of them have even said it’s a slap in the face to Obama’s alma mater, Columbia College. I really don’t think it is, and I’m largely dumbfounded by these people’s reaction.
