Karzai throws Obama a curveball: President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai threw a wrench into the Obama administration's plan for withdrawal from the country today, insisting that American forces be confined only to major bases within the next year (a year earlier than Obama planned). The Taliban also announced that it would cease peace talks with the US. Karzai appears adamant that the withdrawal, "transition," be sped up from 2014 to 2013. The response from American officials appears to be mixed, with many feeling assured that a faster transition can happen, but many others hesitant that it may be too soon.
