Residents of a certain large housing complex in Manhattanville are upset over new security policies that would make their experience… well, a lot like living in a Columbia dorm. At 3333 Broadway, a sprawling five-tower facility on Broadway and 135th streets, tenants will be required to hold identification cards with their photograph and personal information printed on the front—sound familiar?
Concerned residents are launching a protest against the new rules, arguing that the IDs could be easily lost, and anyone who finds them can enter the building. Phyllis Adams, treasurer of the Tenants’ Association, said, “You’re not locking dangerous people out, you’re treating us like we are in jail.” In today's paper, Gina Lee reports that building management has agreed to meet with the protesters, but it's unclear whether anything will change.
Well, affected residents of Manhattanville, I’m sorry to hear about your new ID policy, but the fact of the matter is that we Columbia students have been dealing with the same thing for quite a while. And living the dorm life isn’t so bad! Here are a few things you should get used to if your apartment complex is making the full transition to East Campus.
