Gilded frames, gleaming panes of glass, and scientifically arranged lighting tend to make art museums seem as though they had been designed more for the comfort of the artwork than of the people who come to admire it. Although museums have attempted to become more accessible institutions in recent years, they still attract a select crowd—namely, those with the luxury of being able to set aside a Saturday afternoon to peruse the galleries of the Met.
