Dear Class of 2016,
First of all, congratulations and welcome to Columbia! There are, I am sure, all sorts of statistics and testimonies that say that you're the strongest class yet (and that I would not get in today if I had to compete with you, but I digress).
I'm graduating in a matter of weeks, so I won't actually get to meet any of you (my suite may be hosting a couple of you for days on campus, but you guys know what I mean). But, since I'm (among other things, I swear) the advice columnist here on Spectrum, I thought I'd give you a word or two of wisdom before I left.
I thought all day about what those words should say. There's plenty that I could tell you. I could tell you not to worry that you will hate college if you don't like Orientation (which was, to this day, the worst week of my college career).
I could tell you that you should not mistake lack of knowledge with want of intelligence. I could tell you what to eat in John Jay Dining Hall. But none of that would mean anything to you just yet. So here is something that hopefully will:
