Student group seeks to focus campus attention on Trayvon Martin slaying

This afternoon at 2 p.m., Students Against Mass Incarceration held a demonstration on Low Steps. With the group standing together and wrapping themselves in yellow crime scene tape, one person read aloud the names of murder victims like Sean Bell and Shima Alawadi. After each name, the group responded by shouting "Murdered!" Over 100 names were recited from the list.

"We hope that we get people talking," explained Shondrea Thornton, CC '15 and SAMI's publicist. "No one at Columbia has really responded to the Trayvon Martin shooting."
