The average summer blockbuster has everything avid indie-lovers (read: hipsters) hate: a high budget, a much too low plot-to-explosions ratio, A-list celebrities, gratuitous product placement, and, of course, people in the audience. But there is one thing to draw lovers of indie artistry to a decidedly non-indie venue like the movies on the day of the release of Big Explosions and Superheroes: The Sequel!: the movie’s undoubtedly awesome soundtrack.
Maybe it’s because indie musicians are cheaper, or maybe their more emotionally rich music just fits movies better, but films with a soundtrack (besides the instrumental score) tend to prefer artists like Lykke Li or Kavinsky to Chris Brown or Beyoncé.
