Should you drop that class?

The first days of class are over, but the shopping period is not. You're not locked in to anything you've signed up for yet (except maybe for UWriting and other Core classes). How do you know whether or not to drop a class you're unsure of? Let Spectrum help.

Here are some reasons that you should consider dropping a class:

1. The professor tells you to drop it

Sometimes at Columbia you'll go to class on the first day, and the professor will spend much of the lecture explaining to you why you should not take that class: homework every class, long research papers, exams written in pig latin, office hours held in Queens, TAs who are sociopaths, etc. Some prospective students are emboldened by these types of speeches. They see it as a challenge, and they become more determined to take the class and do well in it. Don't be one of these students. If a professor is honest enough to tell you that a class sucks, take that professor at his or her word.
