University drinking policy has been amended to allow students 21 and over to consume alcohol in Southfield and the LLC dorms, which previously banned all alcohol consumption and possession on the premises.
Rakhi Agrawal reports in today’s paper that the revised policy now states that “a person 21 years of age or older, regardless of the age of his/her roommate or suitemate(s), may possess, store, or consume alcohol in corridor-style residence halls.”
Sure, it’s easy to roll your eyes and scoff that this is hardly a decision of earth-rending magnitude. But is it a step in the right direction?
While enterprising students have been finding ways to subvert university (not to mention state) alcohol regulations since time immemorial (or whenever colleges were invented), it seems that Columbia officials are now moving to accept and confront this fact.
