Gowanus, Brooklyn is so far off the radar of New York’s cultural epicenters that you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone in Morningside Heights who could pronounce its name, let alone find it on a map. Its outer shell doesn’t help to up its glam factor either: Located in South Brooklyn near Park Slope, the industrial neighborhood is a lackluster conglomerate of auto repair shops, old factories, and vacant lots.
